The experience of a typical PhD student, usually consisting of one or more years of coursework and 3-4 years of thesis research, is enriched by parallel training and activities in the domain of innovation. The entrepreneurship and national security innovation courses the student takes, their participation in innovation projects and pitches, and internships in the naval warfare centers and defense industry, not only prepare the student to be better integrated into the national security workforce, but also act as “feedback to basic research," informing the student's thesis effort on this and other Navy and DoD projects. As a result, the graduate research is on a faster track to transition.
